White Washing in Hollywood

Let's talk.
I mean serious stuff. Something has been deeply on my mind. I must get it out.

First, let's talk about what whitewashing is. Many people do it and don't even realise it.
It seems like throughout history it is been socially acceptable. People think this is a black- white issue. in fact, it is not. This is a cultural issue.
There is a series of movies that Disney has decided to re-do. You know, the Disney Animated movies? They have decided to re-do Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Mulan is being re-done in an all Chinese cast. Wow, great. Let's not offend the Chinese. This is good, however, Aladdin, very loosely based on 1,001 Nights, which is a tale coming from the Persian Empire and one of the oldest tales, which has Central Asian and Persian influenced backgrounds, has been casted by Guy Richie, who is a big screen and likes the "Go big or go home" action type movies, has casted Will Smith as "The Genie" And Jafar is casted by some White English Dude. Jasmine is casted as an English Born ethnic person with absolutely NO Indian, Persian, Non Central Asian background.
If I were to revamp this movie, I would use
Jasmine: Nazanin Boniani
I would have a list of other actors and characters for you. But, This isn't about just Disney whitewashing Every damn movie they do (Yeah, yeah, Walt Disney was a racist, we get it, but really, come on, Disney Studios shouldn't be anymore)

There are other movies that has done the same.
Johnny Depp as a Native American in "The Lone Ranger"
Emma Stone as a Hawaiian in "Aloha" We shouldn't expect less from Adam Sandlers though. He made the Polynesians look bad in "50 First Dates"
In "Argo" Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez, who is half- Mexican. Tony Mendez said that he doesn't consider himself Mexican.
Batman: Liam Neeson as Ra's al Ghul, in the comics he is depicted as an Arab
Breakfast at Tiffany's, Mickey Rooney plays an Asian man
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, a Persian is played by Jake Gyllenhaal, a white actor
Short Circuit had an Indian main character played by Fisher Stevens, a white actor
Star Trek: Into Darkness has a villain named Khan Noon Singh (Indian or Pakistani, right?) played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and in the T.V. series the same villain was played by Ricardo Montalban, of European- Mexican descent.
What is more shocking is that the movie, "The Social Network", which is supposed to be based on Divya Narendra, of Indian descent, co-founder of ConnectU, was played by Max Minghella, and to make matters worse, there are more and more people who refuse to look into the Indian Community of actors. The director of The Social Network said he looked "All over", naming London, Montreal, and Paris, and could not find anyone with his "Warren Beatty" suave- personality and good looks. REALLY? Hrithik Roshan,Dev Patel, Ameet Chana, Kunal Nyyar, Jay Sean, Upen Patel, Imran Khan, Adam Beach, Aziz Ansari, Kal Penn, Aasif Mandvi... Just off the top of my head... I am sure there's a few hundred more I don't know...
I think you all get the point.
Going back to Aladdin, produced by Guy Richie. Will he not slaughter the movie like Disney already did in the animated series?
I am not holding my breath on that one because I cringed at Aladdin and felt guilty when I bought the video for my kids, knowing it was not culturally acceptable and completely missed the point in the entire movie as far as the stereotypes, and while the actual story line was nice, they couldn't make it at all culturally acceptable.
Why does Hollywood do this?

Don't get me wrong. I will post about the misconceptions Bollywood has about Americans. But, we get our ideas from the media, right? Humans must beware!

How To Get Screwed Over

So, a couple weeks ago I posted a phone number with what this number in Jamaica has been doing. Let me tell you more.

Last January, a person I know, got a phone call from their "Grandchild" saying that she was in trouble and asking for money. They realized it wasn't their kin, so they hung up. A few days later, they got a phone call  from this guy, the same phone number, saying they owed money to the I.R.S. and that if they didn't send money, they will call the F.B.I. and they will put a lien on the property, and they would be going to prison. When this didn't work, yet, the victims were still talking to them, the Jamaica people told them they are the F.B.I. and that they were in trouble and needed to send money to get out of their debts. A few months ago They also got a phone call saying that their computer was messed up and that "Microsoft" was telling them they would help them with their laptops.
Then came all the phone calls, every 4 minutes. Sometimes every minute. In just 3 hour time period, they got more than 350 missed phone calls.
Fast forward to a couple of months ago.
Same people called, but this time in a local number, called to say they won 2.5 million dollars. All they had to do was send a 10,000 dollar check to them, and they would get their money. They fell for it, among sending almost a million dollars to them over the last couple of months. They were also told in a letter, that the F.B.I. knows about them being scammed, and to send a form back to them, and they will be able to help catch the crooks. They did. Almost a million dollars later, 4 new phone numbers, thousands of harassing phone calls, a Lock Smith called, three taxis, 3 wellness checks from the sheriff, and 6 pizzas brought to their house later, I told my employers I would quit if they did not call the Sheriff to come out and make a formal investigation on these crooks.

So, here is what NOT to do...
First, The I.R.S. will never call you and threaten you over the phone.
The F.B.I. will never contact you through a letter, when you have been scammed.
The I.R.S. will not threaten to work with the F.B.I. if you are late paying your taxes by one year, and they will only work with the F.B.I. in rare occasions, but they will not talk to you in a manner that you feel like you are threatened. Also, when you pay the I.R.S. certain districts will have you send money at certain addresses. (i.e. if you are in Utah, you will send the money to a different I.R.S. facility than a person in Florida)
The F.B.I. will not send you pizza.
If you are told you won money, you never have to pay a person to get said money. This is fraud.
If someone calls you and tells you they are in trouble, you ask them their name, and who is the person and what they are in trouble for. Don't give them any information, example, never say the name of the person who you think it is, make them say who it is.
Never give any information to someone on the phone. If they call you, they need to tell you who they are and not the other way around.
If you register your phone number on the no call list, to put a number on the no call list for complaints takes 31 days from the day you register your number on the no call list.
If someone is continually harassing you, you have every right to be rude to them and not use phone etiquette. In fact, you don't have answer them all the time, in fact, don't answer them.
If you are sending people money freely, you will not be protected by the F.D.I.C. because of you being an idiot.
If you report this scams to the Sheriff or Police, do NOT withhold information to them, because it will prolong the investigation, and work with them! Don't withhold information like "I sent money to them with Western Union" because you look like you are sympathetic to the scammers.
Aaaaand Lastly, if you are going to be a jerk and give money freely to someone who is scamming you, and not listen to your employee or your child, and tell them to back when you are being scammed, don't expect said people to feel bad for you later. It's your fault.

876-493-4455

This is a phone number that keeps calling me. It will not stop. The phone number is from Jamaica. He keeps telling me I have to pay the FBI or The IRS 50,000 dollars because I won a "Cherry Red Mercedes and 2 million dollars". (Insert very angry face here)
Now, he calls me every 3-10 minutes a day... Literally. I have put my phone numbers on the F.T.C. "Do not call List" I have properly registered my phone numbers, and I have made a claim against this number. I have changed my phone numbers three times, and still he keeps calling. He demands to speak to my husband and he is completely harassing me. It's horrible. I am frustrated, angry, upset and at the end of my rope with this guy. I emailed the Ambassador of Jamaica that is stationed in D.C. and complained, that will not do any good either, like they care!
I feel like going to Jamaica myself, talking to the police there about this scum bag, and I feel like throwing a bag of poop on the doorstep of this guy. I am not the first person he has harassed. What gets me is that the guy that is doing this, there are hundreds of people he's done this to already! He's also doing this to my boss. It's disgusting. He is a low life P.O.S. and I am sick of his calling boss, me, and harassing me. He is a bully and a liar. I hope he will be stopped.

The Freedom of Religion In U.S.A.

For over 200 years, we Americans hold dear to our Freedoms. Our Constitution of the U.S.A. is proof that we wanted to be free from Britain's Rule. The First Amendment states this, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press, or the right to peaceably assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." This states clearly that Americans have the right to practice what they want as far as religion is concerned. Is anyone worried about this part of the Constitution being violated? (We Americans don't realize we weren't free from the King of England until 1783, but the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Second Continental Congress on July 4th 1776, and this is why we Celebrate the 4th of July on that day, although we were fighting the Revolutionary War, and didn't win it until 1783...Just Sayin'. Sorry, I had to add this.)
A couple months ago I wrote on my blog about how most of the writers of the Constitution of the United States of America weren't even religious at all. In fact, many of them left their respective churches after the Revolutionary War, and there were only a couple who were christians. The rest claimed no religion and a few of them stopped going to church at all. So, why the hostilities towards Muslims in particular, now? I have to say, I am very grieved indeed, towards the hostile environment that Americans have caused towards a group of people. Just three days ago another Sikh was killed. My readers, I can not stress this enough... SIKHS ARE NOT MUSLIM!!!! Why is it the Americans that should be reading my blogs aren't and the people who read my blogs are the ones who already know this... (My largest readers are from India, Central Asia, Turkey and the Middle East... Then France, Iceland, England and Last... U.S.A. I have more readers from China and Korea than  I do from U.S.A.) Siiiiigh... (Long exhale, for those who have to translate this) I have repeatedly said, and hoped, that people would be enlightened these days, but, sadly, they are not. How can we bring people to better knowledge these days?
I have been taught all my life in what us Mormon's call, the 13 Articles of Faith. They are the 13 statements that us Mormons believes. Number 11 states, "We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where or what they may"... I was raised that The Jewish people, the Muslims and Christians all believe in the same God. They All worship the same God, just they believe differenly about God, and Jesus. In all honesty, while I was in High School, I lived in a city of 70,000 people. We teenagers didn't do much or have a fun hangout, so, I would go to Mosque in Salt Lake City, I have been known to go to Synagogue, I have also helped sell food and flowers for the Hare Krishna temple which is one of the biggest in the Western States, and it is quite beautiful. I love going there, period. Then, there is a Catholic church I used to go to mass, and I have been to the Episcopal Church, as well as I went to a Lutheran church, and I have spent most of my life (37 years,) understanding, learning and reading about other religions all over the world. I doo this because I want to learn and respect other people's beliefs. This is important to me because my ancestors were kicked out of North Eastern U.S.A. in the 1800's and forced out of Illinois, along with hundreds of thousands of other people in the mid 1800's. Did you know in Illinois it was not against the law to kill a Mormon until 2006? True. So, I am passionate about people allowing others to be whatever religion they want. Or, Not want. I have brothers and sisters who are not Mormon, I have brothers and sisters who are. I have a sister who doesn't even believe there is a God. And I have a brother who doesn't know what he believes. I have children who are Muslim, And a daughter who doesn't believe any church, and a son who is Mormon... Does it matter? If the person is good and kind and loving, who cares what they believe in God?
So, now is the legal question... Muslim "Ban"? How is this legal? On any level in  U.S. Law, doesn't anyone foresee a huge lawsuit waiting to happen? Can't anyone smell it coming? This isn't even an issue. The Constitution clearly states that people here in the U.S.A. have the right to practicing their religion without prohibiting freedom of religion. This is baffling me. The thought of the people who are not Christians, and being persecuted in this country, are we re-living the 1500's? I am really dumbfounded with the people who are so obtuse! I really am dumbfounded. (which takes a lot for me to get dumbfounded, if you know me)

Please comment on this if you are totally with me. If you think that it is O.K. to persecute others, don't comment, because I don't want to argue with an idiot.

An Open Letter

Dear Mr (Powerful Man) in (Some Country)   You don't know me. You may never have the honor of meeting me and greeting me to your beautiful country. That is ok. There are millions of your own people that you will never have a chance to meet, yet alone some lowly American. But, I wanted to write you a public and open and honest letter. Why? Because I care for this great country.

I came here three years ago. I did not know your culture, your language. I was scared and I was interested in learn about Turkey. I came to visit and ended up staying here and living with the family that I am now going to be marrying into.

I have really truly learned so much since being here.
I have observed a lot here too.

I want to talk to you about my observations and my concerns for this great nation.

My first concern and observation upon coming to Turkey that concerns me is this.
People here don't wear seat belt, strap their children in the car seats, which is a huge concern to my but, what is more worrisome is that there aren't any laws that I know of that enforce those laws or even use those laws. I understand you can't control everyone all the time, but I have seen some of the craziest drivers come right from here and they are not only crazy drivers, (and I don't meant that as a compliment in the slightest degree) but, they are aggressive, rude and not at all polite. (I have been safer in Los Angeles, California traffic and people complain about them! They have never been to Turkey)
People driving down the street will  have their little children crawling and climbing all over them, and the car like it is a playground for them. I have seen this on more than just a couple hundred times. In fact, I have only seen one family since I have been here for three years, strap their infant in the car seat, and when they did, it was in wrong! So, they had a little infant, I mean little, strapped into the car with a car seat, but, the infant was facing the driver. So, in an accident, the infant not properlly strapped in the car seat  or in the car, can get hurt, too. I have seen children jumping all over the back seat of hte car, moms sitting in the front passenger seat w ith their babies on their laps. Do these mothers know that those babies will surely die if there were an accident? And why isn't the fine country of Turkey informing these people in Public Service Announcements? There are a few slogans I can think of on top of my head that have worked really well, and The fines could be 1,000 TL. Hey, if they don't want a dead baby, hit them where it hurts, they need to buckle those babies up!!!

The next issue that is a huge concern for me is the fact that you Turkish people have a horrible double standard in the Beaches here in Turkey. P. M. , I don't want to sound disrespectful, but, it is vulgar, and lewd to allow and even condne the tourists to come to your country and be your guests and take off their clothes. It is really preverted. I have not ever seen in my life such vulgarity and it is this way that makes it a double standard for us "Yabancilar" who come here and are good modest dressed women, and marry Turks. I would never ever ever show my body ini public like that because it is a disgrace to humanity. It really ought to be against the law. In fact, it is in USA and even in LAs Vegas, where everyone thinks is a big play ground, when really, being naked in public is perverted. I think you would be able to "clean up" the Beaches by posting signs on all Turkish beaches stating that it is against the law for ALL people to not have a bathing suit on. You know in Miami it is against the law to be naked in their beaches? I find it very offensive and I know I am not alone with this issue. I want to go to the beach without seeing naked people. Muslims are not supposed to be naked in Public and yet, you allow Nudity on the beaches in Turkey. Who wants to see naked ness on the beaches? Perverts? I propose this
Upon people coming to Turkey, post signs stating there is a new law, called a Condemnation of Lewdness law.
Anyone who takes off their clothes in public will be fined 150 TL for a warning, 450 TL for the second offense and, if it is not paid to a Police Magistrate before leaving Turkey, They will be subjected to more fines and possible jail time, plus banned from coming into Turkey for being Lewd. For Turkish Citizens that do not comply with this Lewdness law and are fined, if the fines accumulate up to 1,000 TL They will be banned from beaches, jail time and will have to pay 1,500 TL and you can take it out of their pay checks every month until it is paid off.
This law should be taken seriously. Many people who come from outside Turkey to enjoy your beautiful sites and beautiful beaches, the women who come are not seen as respectable women, because people have this mentality that "Foreingers come to Turkey to have sex, take off their clothes on the beaches and go home", and it is not the right way to think of other people, but that is "how it is here". I feel there are every women who come to the beaches think it is ok to derobe. I am here to say, it is NOT ok. I dont want to go to a beach, and see a bunch of people naked, and I don't take off my clothes on beaches or any public place. It is lewd and gives a bad message to The Turkish men here that it is OK to Rape the Foreginer Women. And, of course it is not ever ok, but, the mentality is really different with the Cultures in Europe and Turkey. For this and to protect Womena nd Children, you must have a Condemnation For Lewdness Law. I would really beseech you to do this. It would really make Turkey's beaches safer, prettier and more Family Oriented. (And you want Family Oriented)

Along with making the Beaches prettier, I have another problem. See, people here in Trakya and every beach I have been to here in Turkey, think it is ok to trash up the beaches. In fact, not just the beaches. I have driven down your highways where people will (I am not exggerating) roll down their window, throw out trash, even I have seen dirty diapers thrown out onto the highway! (I know disgusting!) And I am here to ask you to please start a "Keep Turkey Beautiful" Campaign. This will include the Lewd Condemntaion Law, Anti Sounds (people honking their horns at cute little grandmas who in Çorlu have no where to walk but in the road and idiots drive by, honk their horns at them!! ) and Littering in Turkey. I propose this. That those people who are in jail for non- dangerous crimes, petty crimes, will do community service of cleaning up litter. Also, those who litter will have to pay a fine of 500TL, but will go up after each fine, and if they don't pay this fine they can have their license revoked until they pay (BTW the Seat Buckle Law Should be named Buckle Up Turkey and ANY parents not preperly restaining their infant, toddler, child in the car with the proper seat bealt and seats are subjected to fines and their license taken away)

Those laws if they are not in Turkey, should be.

The elephant in the room I want to address, is the cray cray law you have of THY Women not allowed to wear red or pink lipstick? REALLY??? What if you hired a black woman at THY? She can't be expected to wear anyother color lipstick BUT RED because ANY other color will look hideous. PM, When did you start wearing make up to know what an asinine  law this is?  So, you have the utterly ridiculous Night Time Soap Opera, that for some reason you have taken very seriously and found it your mission to make Sultan Suleyman look like an angel when he WASN'T and then you have the women in the Soap Opera look like htey are gray in their faces because you will not allow them to wear make up (Which is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen) then you went to THY and toldl them they cant wear red lipstick or pink lipstick. But, yet, you have Esra Erol (another stupid TV Show) who wears hideous clothes and from time to time her make up looks bad, you have the morning show woman that helps find Lost and dead family members Mujgan (??) and she wears not only really bad make up but who does her ward robe? Her clothes are ugly! (The same person that finds Ezra Erol's clothes perhaps?) Then you have another Man-Turned Woman- who wears about the worst make up ever, and you pick on the THY women? Why? Why could you just say No make up or hair styles and colors that distracts and looks unprofessional, including Tattoos??? which by the way, many girls here in Turkey have a skin tone that when wearing Pastel colors as make up makes them look really bad. Why don't you ban Clown Make up instead? Why don't you tell the Man Woman to stop hurting my eyes and tell him to wear decent normal dresses, and wear nice make up that doesn't make him look so much like a clown? Why are you picking on the THY Women? Why are you double standard like that?

While I am asking, "Why?" here is a riddle for you. You don't like someone, so you throw them in jail. Because you have the power to do so. Are you a bully or a real elected Government Leader who really cares about your country? When are you releasing the people from jail who have done nothing wrong, like say, the journalists? Then release the Military? Why are you a bully and why are you starting to become an oppressive leader that does not look at your Human Rights? When are you going to better your country?

I am closing but this will not be my last open letter to you

Sincerely
D

Facebook Detox Would This Be 1,000?

It feels like I have a love hate relationship with Facebook.
I thought for Lent (although I am not Catholic, Episcopalian, Protestant, Orthodox, nor do I belong to anything other than the L.D.S. Faith) I still thought for Lent I would give up Facebook and go on every so often. I have a huge loathing for some of the things my friends post on Facebook, and I hate stupidity also. I also hate when my friends argue among each other and when they are rude about other people.
I hate with a passion and with a deep burning in my soul this atrocity of a design called "Timeline". What is worse there is no choice in the matter. They are what is called "rolling" all accounts to this horrible monstrosity of a  design for everyone all over the world. And there is no choice in the matter. Everyone has to have it. I hate it. I hate it with a deep passion and I have to say, no one understands how to use it. What is worse it that it switches from side to side and makes it impossible to read anyone's profile.
I think that once a year ago someone was drunk and decided to design something that made sense to only the most stupid person in the whole planet, which would only include a small handful of people, this horrendous Timeline. I think it was also spat out by the Devils Carnage and I presume not even the devil can read it himself.
In any case, I tried my best to leave Facebook. My problem lies in the people I want to really connect with. They for some reason do not answer their emails but will in face answer their Facebook wall. Can you believe it? Have we gotten to where we communicate through "Facebook-ing"? How obnoxious is that!
And can you believe that the people of thi social networking device has copy righted the word "Face" and wants to copy right the word, "book" seriously? I want a list of words I have made up and a list of words I pronounce to be copy righted too. First off... Happy People Are Happier. I want that copy righted. My dad and I made it up and we have been saying it for years and only him and I used it in code, so why not?
I will one day list a bunch of things I want copy righted.. If I list them now they will hit the popularity polls and I will be out of words and phrases that everyone will copy.

Anyway... I am once again trying to go cold turkey on that webpage. Please this time, sincerely wish me luck!
Oh, but I have to go on still for those people that actually do not answer anything other than Facebook... Yeah, I know. But what can I say? They are family or close enough to be... And some of them when asked don't even know their own email... Just... Oh, message me here... Sigh... Still trying.

Jack Nicholson, Baby

So some jerk off freaking Lucifer's monkey, Judas'  hacked into my email account and stole my contact list and wrote to my bank, and told my bank I am fake... Basically high jacked my bank account!
I really hate people like that and I hope they die a slow painful death.
I hope that some strange flesh eating bacteria starts slowly eating their skin and they have horrible diarrhea.
I hope their man thing falls off too.
I hate people that violate other people.
I have been really sick for the last couple of days. So I have not been on here to  write a lot. I know you readers miss me something terrible.
I had a strange dream that Jack Nicholson was working in this factory, before he was an actor, and said, "Jensen, check your email." I woke up and did, wow. Maybe Jack Nicholson is my guardian angel?
Stranger things are about to happen?

Your Stupidity Stifles Me

I will be posting an article. This article is about home birthing in Sudan.
Then I want to bash the article...
 Sounds fun???
 Let's go!

South Sudan women shun hospitals despite childbirth risks

Published On Sun Nov 06 2011
Lushi Rashid (C), a 29 year old muslim South Sudanese woman, gives birth to her fifth child at her family home with the help of her aunt (R) and Regabia Ahmad (L), a qualified birth attendant, in Juba, the capital city of South Sudan, July 18, 2011. Regabia has been delivering babies in South Sudan for over twenty years. she was trained by the health ministry and works at a local primary health clinic. With fewer than 100 trained midwives for a population of over eight million, South Sudan has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world.

Lushi Rashid throws her arm up in the air, stretches out on the yellow sheets and ululates in pain.
“Jiijiijiiijiii,” she cries as the contractions grow stronger, emitting the high-pitched trilling noise that South Sudanese women make to show emotion.
Sitting on a stool at Rashid’s bedside, midwife Regabia Ahmad shushes her. “It’s not good to shout,” she says gently. “If you shout there is pain; if you don’t shout there is pain. So you keep quiet.”
Though she lives near the country’s best public hospital in Juba, South Sudan’s largest city, the 29-year-old Rashid has decided to have her baby at home with a midwife.
“At the hospital, everyone is trying to do something to make the baby come when it is not yet ready,” she says. “At home. . . there are not so many people.”
Ahmad, 42, takes off her watch, washes her hands and puts on plastic gloves. The baby will be born in about an hour, at 5:30 this afternoon, she predicts.
Ahmad has been delivering babies for more than 20 years, through the country’s civil war and afterward. She was trained by the state health ministry and works at a local health clinic. Rashid is one of the lucky 10 per cent of women in the country who will see a qualified birth attendant.

For every 100,000 live births in the country, 2,054 women die, according to statistics from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). It’s a situation the health minister of the East African nation has called “our greatest nightmare.” A woman in South Sudan has a one-in-seven chance of dying in childbirth over the course of her lifetime.
The world’s newest country — it gained independence in July after more than 20 years of civil war — South Sudan is chronically underdeveloped. Even among African nations, where the maternal mortality rates tend to be highest, it stands out. In neighbouring Uganda, for example, only 435 women die for every 100,000 births, says the UNDP. (In Canada, the number is 12, according to Unicef’s 2008 figures.)
Here, “most of the population doesn’t have a health unit and if they do, there’s no health provider and no drugs,” says Dr. Abadallah Mergani, head of obstetrics at Juba Teaching Hospital, the nation’s largest.
On a busy weekday morning, Mergani rushes between making rounds, operating the ultrasound machine and administering the ward. He’s one of only a handful of obstetricians in the country.
The majority of women who die in childbirth here suffer from haemorrhaging and sepsis, treatable problems in the developed world. The absence of qualified medical personnel, along with the lack of health facilities and transportation difficulties — the nation has only 50 kilometres of paved road — can render otherwise minor complications fatal.
And a lack of medical supplies means doctors are sometimes unable to help even those women who do make it to the hospital. “Some even die while we are looking for blood,” says Mergani. The hospital has no blood bank.
Since the end of the civil war in 2005, there have been efforts to reduce the maternal mortality rate, but the country has a long way to go. “In some areas you are starting from the ground up,” says Gillian Garnett, a midwifery specialist with the United Nations Population Agency.
The agency has a recruitment program for midwives but has found it difficult to attract people since midwifery is traditionally considered a low-status profession in South Sudan.
And there are other cultural factors at play. Even where hospitals are accessible, women often choose not to go to them.
It can be seen as a sign of weakness to give birth in the hospital. “Women feel that they have to show strength,” says Garnett. “In the hospital, they feel like you are pampered.”
Furthermore, “it’s the culture that a lady should deliver at home with her family around her, her mother, her grandfather, her sisters,” says Mergani.
Accordingly, standing over Lushi Rashid in her bedroom are her aunt and sister.
Her 3-year-old son has been shooed outside by the midwife, but he peers in the window. A neighbour pops her head over the fence to check on the progress of the birth.
Rashid’s mother enters the bedroom and sprinkles water over her daughter’s abdomen. It’s a blessing for the good health of mother and child. There’s no need for her daughter to go to a hospital, Marcelina Dudu believes.
“Before, during the war there were no (hospitals). I had three sets of twins without fear at home. Even Lushi was born at home. They were all born at home,” she says.
The contractions become closer together and Rashid ululates louder and more frequently.
Ahmad reaches under the sheet covering Rashid’s knees and, almost before the others in the room know what’s happening, pulls a baby boy out from between the mother’s legs. After a second, he emits a strong, healthy cry.
The midwife wraps the baby in a purple blanket and consults her watch. Just as she predicted, it’s just a few minutes before 5:30.
Mama Dudu pulls out her mobile phone and calls friends and relatives.
Despite the pain of the ordeal, and the fact that she has four other children, Rashid says she wants to have more. “I want to take some time and then I want a girl because I have all boys,” she says.
Her husband, Amin Rashid, arrives home about an hour later. He’s been at work; men rarely attend their children’s births in South Sudan.
He knows of women who have died in childbirth but he approves of his wife’s decision to deliver at home. “The hospitals in Juba are poor. All the (government) ministers here, when their wives have one or two months remaining, they go to Nairobi or Kampala (to deliver).”
Collecting her medical supplies, Ahmad prepares to leave. She doesn’t know it yet, but when she arrives home she will be called to attend another birth that will keep her out until the early hours. Given the small number of midwives in the nation, she’s always on call.
Ahmad gets paid for her work as a midwife by the government. But despite long hours and a culture in which government workers often ask for a little something extra from those for whom they perform services, she doesn’t charge the families.
She sees her work as a kind of vocation. “If you give me something, I will take it; if you do not give me anything, I do not ask. This is the work God gave me to do.”

OK...I know a woman that is a friend of mine living in the tiny country of Eritrea. They have many ties to Sudan and not only that she has been one of the fore-runners in trying to get more Birthing hospitals in SUDAN (dun dun dunnnnnn)
This is an article that is misleading, and parts are fabricated. I am shocked to think this is supposed to be a pro- give- birth- at- home article!
Let's Start with each fact as they are given.

This article is just a lie, glamorizing how easy it is to give births to babies in Africa. Given the fact that Africa has one of the highest malnutrition-ed rates, why would Doctors put babies at a greater risk by inducing pre-term or early labor? That is just not making any sense at all. That is a full blown lie.
Not so many people?
There are kids watching you have your baby through the window and you think that is more private to have a baby in the living room of your home than in a hospital?

Qualified Birth attendant is not correct either.
I have a friend who works for the Department of State in The Region (Sudan and Eritrea). One of the projects they are working on is more facilities for giving birth. In order to do this they must meet with the local people and they have to see the needs of the people. Qualified is not correct because the "Midwives" just walk around telling people they know how to deliver and they basically can there. FACT: The same person that delivers babies in Sudan also circumcises young girls. (Another topic I will be talking about soon)

Another Fact: In Sudan there is only one Hospital, and there is only one OBGYN. All the women interviewed by the Dept of State and by a Doctor who is Sudanese and she is also very knowledgeable of the Culture and country, she said that the women DO want to have their babies in hospitals and that the women there do not understand why Western Women, upon hearing opting to have their babies at home, and not in a hospital.
Having a baby in a hospital is a luxury there but they are not condemned by having babies in the Hospitals at all. In fact, they can not get to the hospitals in time and Upon interviewing Eritrean women they laughed when told that American women were having babies at home because "African Women can do it" well, yeah, African women have no choice in the matter.

Another Fact: There is less road than what the article mentioned.

Another Fact: Midwifery is not considered a low status job, it is the cold hard truth that when you are hired by the Government, now to be a midwife or any Medical Profession in Sudan, to get rid of FGM (or Circumcising Females) They must not perform this Traditional and yet horrible and needless practice and so the Midwives that are not choosing to work as one under legal terms are actually still doing that practice which makes the jobs of the hospitals more difficult.
Notice how when she says there are less people in home and more people in the hospital, later you read about how the whole family is there, how neighbors peer through the fence to see if she has had her baby, how the children are being shooed out of the living room and how the Grandfather, mother, sisters, etc are all there waiting for the arrival of the baby? Don't you think that is in itself contradictory? The only thing that was correct in the article was the fact that Sudan is the highest death rate among newborns and the highest death rate while giving birth in the world. The fact that in The Star they mention that the woman giving birth was Muslim is a huge slap in the face to Muslims and had nothing to do with article. Why mention t? There are idiot Christian women in Europe and in USA that give birth to their children at home, and so why would they mention it? does it make the article more factual? What would that make readers think about Muslims? About how they give birth? Their ideas of giving birth at homes? I found it annoying to think that they would even say anything about the Religious practice of anyone mentioned in the article.

This article after reading it myself, made me more inclined to tell people how stupid they are for having babies at home. those that are in Africa most women have no choice! But First World and even Second World women (yes.. You Europeans) You guys should never be playing with your life nor your child's life by thinking you are smarter than a Doctor and cleaner than a Hospital. Why do you want to risk infections, diseases and all kinds of problems by having a baby in your living room? It is disgraceful and you do not know more than highly trained doctors.
I know someone that had 8 children. 7 born at home but her 7th was born and lived a very short life and died. I am inclined to say that she is an idiot for never seeking Prenatal Care never having ultra sounds that would have saved her baby not only from dying but from SUFFERING because she had no idea her baby was SUFFERING and dying!!! That is pure being stupid and Brutal.
Clearly her 8th child born the one year anniversary of the death of her 7th child, was indeed born in a hospital. And oddly... She even had an epidural and said, "If I'd have known all my births were like this I would have had ALL My children born in a hospital"
Women in the Second and First world countries have the choice of having a Doctor there at the birth only if it is a medical emergency, and can have nurses and midwives deliver the babies if they wish. These trained and qualified people can deliver in Clinics, and Birthing Centers and do not have to be in a hospital yet you still get the feeling of home but you are in a cleaner environment than that of a home surrounded by little kids, neighbors and the family dog chasing a ball while you are trying to have a baby.
I would even respect a mother choosing to have her child at a Clinic and saying... Well, I have had bad experiences with Doctors... I prefer a Midwife.. I respect that more then the women that say, "Babies in Africa are born all the time with no problems in conditions worse than mine... I don't need a Dr"... For those women I say, Your Stupidity Stifles Me
