The End of a School Year for Some of my Students

My students in one Factory I go to have no idea how lucky they really are.
  Let me tell you why.
There is a Company Siemens Bosch. They make all kinds of major appliances. They also are in partner with other comapnies and make many things. I for one have a wonderful curling iron that Snuggle gave me for my birthday. Anyway, this is the program they have here in Turkey, in a nutshell.
The Kids here in Turkey pretty much at about 14 decide on a trade or what they want to be and then they will go to the schools that specialize to their needs and teach them what they will learn. Public School system here is that they must pay for everything and the Government will pitch in if the family does not have enough money. (Yes, Turkey has a Prime Minister but it is a Socialist Country for the most part and in Theory)
Anyway, here in Turkey the Government will give students tests and depending on their test that is what they will study in the University. In my observation there is an enormous amount of Turkish young men and women that study to be Chemists, Doctors, Engineers and Mathematicians.
Anyway, they will all through out their High School days study for the huge test which is every March and They  go to a school and take the test on a Satellite Viewing for all of Turkey to see. They will sit for about 3-4 hours and follow the instructions given to them via satellite. The test is most commonly called the TOFEL. There are others. Anyway, depending on the results, the teacher will then tell you what you are good at being.
Now where Bosch comes in. If students show a sign of wanting to work in a Factory all their life and they show that they are hard workers and take a different test and pass, They can go into the Apprentice Program at Bosch. They only take about 30-35 new freshmen a school year.
This Bosch Factory is in Çerkezköy, Turkey.
They are taught English, Math, computer Science,Engineering classes. For balance they are also taught Theology, Turkish, and highly encouraged to do Sports.
Part of the Curriculum is that they also learn to build things and work in the Shop. They come in at 8:30 am, and they are finished at the end of the day at 6:00 pm. They have an hour and fifteen minute break for lunch and there is an on site cook. I asked the students and they all love the food there. I hear the food is just excellent.
The students are paid to be there and depending on their grades are paid more the more they show how well they are. They are given one month off a year in the summer and then they come back to only work in the Summer. In the fall they start off school again and have few trips they are taken with the Teachers. They go skiing, camping, sight seeing, and the beaches of Turkey in warm weather.
There is one student that was his first year at Bosch. He is a Gypsy but he really wanted to stay in school and Bosch granted him this chance. He works and goes to school and he said he wants to be an Electrical Engineer.
That does not end there. Once a Student is finished with their Junior Year in High School at Bosch, they are given the choice of working or going to University. If they work there they can depending on their Apprenticeship do many other work there or they can go to University. If they go to University Bosch will pay them provided they come back and work for them. When they come back and work they are guaranteed a job there and there are not a lot of people that do not want to stop working for Bosch. Now, this does not end there.
Bosch has time shares in many parts all over Turkey. When families want to go, they are allowed to use the facilities. They do not have to pay. Bosch also does things with the students to keep them wanting to come back to work. The Factory is well light, quiet, open, clean!!! And there are people that all day bring tea to the workers, make sure that everything is clean while the Factory workers are working.
The Employees have picnic areas for Employees only. They will come to worok and things might be a little stressful and so they can walk around the park, or eat at the picnic area to relax.
They also have pools in the Summer for only Employees to come and relax at the pool during their lunch break. They are given 5-6 paid weeks off a year. They are all very well paid. The management is nice to the employees. This company is amazing to work for!
The factory itself in Turkey makes large appliances for USA. They ship all over the world but 99% goes to USA.
These kids are really lucky, really blessed to have this opportunity to learn English, go to school and get paid to go to school.
I was honored that Bosch wanted me to work for them. I was honored that they would choose me and my friend to come teach them this past school year, and I hope that there will be mre years to come working for them!
I close with saying to my students to have a wonderful Summer and to the  company, Bosch, you guys are wonderful and it was a pleasure working for you!

  1. You might wonder how the 4,000 people get to and from work everyday? There are servis buses. 4 to and from Istanbul, 6 to Çorlu, 2 to Sarayı, 3 to Silivri, and 2 to Çerkezköy. Sometimes some people drive, but 97% of everyone takes the service bus
